As a responsible corporate citizen, PT Hero Supermarket Tbk plays an active role in three areas: community and economy, children's education, welfare and health support, and social, environmental and disaster relief. Such activities help PT Hero reaching out to all levels of the society throughout Indonesia with the support and participation from its staff, customers and suppliers.
Community and Economy
Employment and Training
Through its 480 outlets spanning across Indonesia, PT Hero establishes a strong relationship with the local communities and provides employment opportunities for local residents.
As of 30th September 2010, PT Hero employed more than 13,200 employees. From 1st January to 30th September 2010 the Company offered employment to a total of 1,208 new staff.
As of 30th September 2010, PT Hero provided a total of 1,253 training hours to 4,282 employees in its training center, which is equivalent to an average of 3.5 hours of training per employee.
PT Hero also provides job training for high school students and retail training programme for small independent operators in co-operation with the Ministry of SMEs and Cooperatives and the Ministry of Trade.
Procurement from Local SMEs
Partnership programme has long been established with farmers groups, village cooperatives, and SMEs either in the form of Mitra Binaan, a development partnership which emphasizes management and human resources development; or Mitra Usaha, a business partnership which emphasizes the establishment of business partnership with farmers groups, SMEs, village cooperatives as suppliers of vegetables, fruits, fish, meat, traditional food, snacks and other types of home industries.
In 2010, PT Hero purchased about Rp 228 billion worth of goods from 3,122 SME suppliers, with an annual transaction reaching almost Rp 300 million.
During the global economic crisis in 2009, PT Hero took the initiative to speed up payments to SME suppliers two weeks earlier to assist the SMEs' cash flow. A total of 379 SME suppliers benefited from this new arrangement.
A wide range of merchandises, including traditional cakes, snacks, beverages and other food items are sold within the lease area, especially in Giant hypermarkets, by small traders and street vendors.
PT Hero actively promotes SME products in its retail outlets and participates in the SMEs Food Exhibition (Pangan Nusa). The annual food exhibition is initiated by the Ministry of Trade with PT Hero offering SMEs free business consultation and an opportunity to meet its buyers.
Children Welfare, Education and Health Support
Round Up Charity (Small Change for Big Change)
Launched in 2008, the Round Up Charity programme provides a platform for customers to donate their small change voluntarily for the good cause of children education, welfare and health support. Around Rp 2 billion was collected and donated to Yayasan Kanker Payudara-breast cancer/Pita Pink and Sekolah Darurat Kartini.
In 2009, a total of Rp 2.9 billion were collected through this programme with proceeds going to Indonesia Street Children Association (ISCO), Bakti Luhur Foundation, World Harvest Foundation, Karang Widya Foundation, Cinta Anak Bangsa Foundation and Indonesia Red Cross.
As of November 2010, a total of Rp 1.58 billion were donated to PKPU Foundation, Dompet Dhuafa Foundation, Yayasan Kesejahteraan Anak Indonesia for children's education and Indonesia Red Cross.
Social, Environmental and Disaster Relief
PT Hero supports many programmes through direct donations or by supporting various care programme, benefiting orphanages, disabled children, elderly homes, underprivileged community and other non-profit organizations.
PT Hero responds promptly towards disaster relief especially during the dengue fever outbreak, tsunami, earthquake, flood, outburst of mount Merapi and Situ Gintung dam disaster by collaborating with Indonesia Red Cross, Dompet Dhuafa (Zakat, Shadaqah & Infag) and other NGOs.
Various bazaar and discount markets were held regularly in co-operation with local governments and retail association to help the low-income families in the regions.
PT Hero cares for the environment and gives its full support to the Ministry of Environment to launch the use of environmental-friendly bags. After pioneering the eco-friendly bag in 2006, PT Hero launched a series of green bags in 2009 which included a bag that is biodegradable within two years, a reusable "Green for Life" shopping bag and a stylish signature shopping bag designed by Indonesia designer Adjie Notonegoro.
In 2009, PT Hero was awarded by the Governor of DKI Jakarta for promoting and using bio-degradable bags in all of its outlets including Giant, Hero, Guardian and Starmart.
