Annual Community Project

In 2010, Dairy Farm Singapore embarks on another meaningful project to promote social harmony and help the less fortunate in Singapore.

With the theme "Heartbeat – Many People, One Community", this project is a major effort by Dairy Farm Singapore to promote harmony through celebrating the diversity of our multi-ethnic community and the Olympic values of "Excellence, Friendship & Respect" in support of the Singapore Youth Olympic Games 2010. The community project was held in partnership with the Orange Ribbon Celebrations 2010.

The highlight of this project was setting a new Singapore Book of Record with a wide variety of contingents doing mass percussion simultaneously above the Dhobby Ghaut MRT station on 18th July 2010, and receiving 201,000 pledges from people conveying their personal commitment to live in harmony as one gracious society. As a result of this achievement, Dairy Farm Singapore donated 20,000 kg of rice in aid of 4,000 needy families to our adopted charity – Care Community Services Society. The event brought together more than 1,500 participants from across races and nationalities to celebrate our diverse cultures and our common bond as one people of Singapore.

Prior to this mega event, Dairy Farm Singapore also hosted a charity golf event on 8 July 2010 at the Laguna National Golf and Country Club. A total of 140 avid golfers participated and S$210,000 was raised in aid of Care Community Society Services.

In addition to this launch event, all our stores in Dairy Farm Singapore also participated in a six-week promotion campaign which involved various promotional activities and a community lucky draw.

Cold Storage Kids Run 2010 – The Race for Every Kid

The Cold Storage Kids Run held at the F1 Pit Building saw an impressive turnout of 5,000 children, all revved up for a day of sporty fun in the sun. In its third year, the Cold Storage Kids Run 2010 reached out to all children, including those who have yet started to learn how to walk, much less run.

This year's Cold Storage Kids run saw a new unique running category that targeted children between the ages of six months to 23 months. The "Gain IQ Stroller Chase" was a non-competitive 800 metre fun run specially tailored for parents and their infants and children.

"We are glad to see how the Cold Storage Kids Run is visibly increasing in size with each year. We are particularly pleased to see that the running categories catering to the children of younger age have received the most number of participants; this shows that more parents are starting their children on a healthy lifestyle from a young age," said Mr. Lim Boon Cheong, CEO - Cold Storage Supermarkets.

Local veteran athletes Mr. Kunalan also took time off and ran side by side with the extraordinary children from The Spastic Children's Association of Singapore.

Launched in 2006, the Cold Storage Kids Run aims at inculcating the right eating habits and instilling a healthy lifestyle among children. The event also promotes family togetherness and the joy of outdoor activities.

Compassion in the month of Ramadan at Giant

On the recent Muslim's holy month of Ramadan, Giant welcomed the Malay Youth Literary Association (4PM) for Ramadan On-Wheels (ROW), an annual multi-racial food disbursement initiative organized by 4PM. ROW has annually reached out to an average of 150-260 underprivileged families.

In line with their theme "A DECADE OF SERVICE COLORS YOUR LIFE", 4PM repackaged ROW into a project which empowers the beneficiaries with skills and knowledge to help them spring back in times of crisis rather than giving free handouts which leads to dependency.

In phase three of the initiative, ROW Volunteers brought the beneficiaries to the hypermarket to buy groceries for the families and thereafter adjourned for mass breakfast to promote community bonding.

Social Partnership and Health Education at Guardian

Guardian kick started 2010 with a charity auction dinner for our partners at Capella Sentosa Singapore. A total of S$45,336 was raised through a Miniature Charity Golf Challenge and charity auction for the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Singapore (MDAS).

As the exclusive retail partner of the Singapore Cancer Society, Guardian issued a record 27,000 free Faecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) kits to the public in March 2010. The FOBT is a simple screening test to detect colorectal cancer. With these efforts, we strive to assist patients with early colorectal cancer detection.

Over 500 participants attended the InsideOut Workshop on 25th September 2010 organised by Guardian. The workshop is a community programme which aims to educate the public about breast cancer. Topics covered at the workshop also included anti-aging, sensitive skin, financial health and most importantly, early detection and mammogram check. In addition, "Colours of Life" windmills were sold at all outlets and all proceeds were donated to the Singapore Cancer Society.

During Pharmacist Week in October 2010, 12 of the 13 Pharmacist Health Ambassador Programme awards conferred by the Health Promotion Board and Pharmaceutical Society of Singapore were won by Guardian pharmacists. The pharmacists were awarded for their excellent contribution in long-term diseases follow-up/health promotion and smoking cessation efforts.
